Why choose us

Why Choose Cook Counseling for Columbus Group Therapy?

At Cook Counseling, our group therapy programs are designed to go beyond simply providing a place to talk. We focus on creating clinically structured, trauma-informed, and highly supportive environments where members build practical coping skills and meaningful connections with others who understand their experiences. Here’s what sets us apart:

We’re Trauma-Informed and Nervous-System-Informed

Our practice specializes in trauma treatment and polyvagal-informed interventions, including the Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP). Every group is built with emotional safety, regulation, and connection at its core.

We’re Affirming for Everyone

Our groups serve a wide range of populations — teens, adults, veterans, LGBTQIA+ individuals, neurodiverse clients, and people navigating trauma, anxiety, depression, grief, substance use, and major life transitions. Our approach is warm, affirming, and collaborative, never rigid or one-size-fits-all.

Our Facilitators Are Clinically Exceptional

Facilitators are selected for both clinical expertise and their ability to create emotionally safe, engaging group environments. Many have advanced training in DBT, CBT, ACT, Motivational Interviewing, and trauma-informed care, and all receive ongoing supervision and consultation within our multidisciplinary practice.

Our Groups Are Thoughtfully Structured

Our groups go beyond open discussion — incorporating evidence-based exercises, coping tools, guided reflection, mindfulness practices, and real-world skill application, all at a pace that feels approachable and supportive.

Frequently Asked Questions
About Group Therapy in Columbus

What are the benefits of group therapy?

Group therapy offers something individual therapy simply can’t — the experience of being seen, heard, and supported by people who are facing similar challenges. One of the most powerful moments in group therapy is realizing that others are facing the same struggles, and that sense of solidarity can be transformative.

Members also report feeling accountable and look forward to feedback from their peers, since progress in group therapy comes not just from your therapist but from the people in it with you. Over time, group therapy helps build social and communication skills, confidence, and the ability to recognize patterns like people-pleasing or self-sabotage. It’s also a more cost-effective option than individual therapy, making quality, clinician-led support more accessible.

Do I need to be in individual therapy to join a group?

No, individual therapy is not a requirement for any of our groups. That said, most of our group therapy participants are also in individual therapy, and many find that the two work really well together. If you’re unsure what’s right for you, our team is happy to help you figure it out.

How is group therapy different from individual therapy?

Individual therapy tends to be focused on deep, processing-heavy work between you and your therapist. Group therapy is more skills-based and relational — you’re learning and practicing alongside peers, getting real-time feedback, and building the kind of connection that can only come from shared experience.

How do I know which group is right for me?

If you’re wondering whether group therapy in Columbus is right for you, the best place to start is a conversation with your therapist — or reach out to our team directly. We’ll ask a few questions to make sure the group is a good fit before your first session. As a large practice with multiple locations and telehealth options, we can also help you find a format (in-person or virtual) that fits your life.

Is group therapy for teens in Columbus different from adult group therapy?

Yes — our teen groups are designed specifically with adolescent experiences in mind. The Teen Girls Anxiety Group, for example, focuses on the kinds of challenges that are unique to that stage of life: social anxiety, school stress, athletic performance pressure, and major transitions like moving or a parent’s divorce. The group setting also gives teens a chance to connect with peers who get it, which can be especially meaningful at that age. All teen groups at Cook Counseling are facilitated by trauma-informed therapists who understand how to hold space for younger clients.

Is group therapy covered by insurance?

Yes, in most cases. Our billing team can run a verification of benefits to give you an estimate of your out-of-pocket cost before you commit. Reach out at billing@cookcounselingandconsulting.com.
