Types of Mental Health Issues

Mental health issues are often misunderstood. Many people think that mental health is all about being happy and cheerful all the time, but this is not the case. Mental health includes a range of problems, such as depression, anxiety, and trauma, and can also be complicated, such as bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. Each of these conditions can seriously impact a person’s life.

Stress and Anxiety

Stress and anxiety are two of the most common mental health issues.

Stress is a response to a real or perceived threat. It can be caused by work, family, finances, or even the news. Anxiety is when someone feels nervous or worried about something that may happen in the future. This can be caused by public speaking, exams, or meeting new people. Both stress and anxiety can lead to physical symptoms such as a racing heart, sweating, and difficulty sleeping.

Depression

Depression is more than just feeling down for a few days. According to American Psychiatric Association, depression is a medical illness that adversely impacts how you feel, think, and act. (American Psychiatric Association, 2022) It’s a persistent feeling of sadness and low mood that can last for weeks or even months. Depression can make it difficult to do everyday activities and can lead to physical problems such as fatigue and aches. It can also make it hard to concentrate, remember things, or make decisions. People with depression may also have thoughts of self-harm or suicide.

Trauma

Trauma can occur after someone has been through a stressful or life-threatening event. This could be a car accident, natural disaster, sexual assault, or war.

Trauma can lead to symptoms such as flashbacks, nightmares, and difficulty sleeping. It can also cause anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Burnout

Burnout is a state of physical, emotional, and mental exhaustion. It can be caused by work, caring for someone, or other demands in life. Burnout can lead to fatigue, irritability, difficulty sleeping, and loss of motivation. It can also make it hard to concentrate or make decisions.

Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar disorder is a mental health condition that affects mood. People with bipolar disorder can have episodes of mania, where they feel extremely happy and energized, and episodes of depression, where they feel very low and down. These episodes can last for days, weeks, or even months. Bipolar disorder can be challenging to manage and sometimes lead to self-harm or suicide.

Schizophrenia

Schizophrenia is a mental health condition affecting how someone thinks, feels, and behaves. People with schizophrenia may have delusions, hallucinations, and problems with concentration and memory. They may also behave strangely or unusually. Schizophrenia can be a very debilitating condition and can sometimes lead to self-harm or suicide.
